Drawing challenge ideas

  • Combo spin: spin twice and merge both prompts ("dragon" + "treehouse").
  • Add a twist with the Random Color Wheel: draw it using only that colour.
  • Speed round: set a 5-minute timer and draw the result.
  • Pictionary: each player spins and draws for the others to guess.
  • Inktober or 30-day challenges: switch on Elimination mode and draw one prompt a day.

Drawing prompts for kids

Swap the entries for simple prompts like "a happy sun", "my family", "a monster eating ice cream" or "a rocket to the moon". Kids love spinning the wheel themselves, and it gives them a starting point without the pressure of a blank page.

The three-part prompt method

The most reliable way to get an idea worth drawing is to combine three things: a character, a setting and a twist. Take one from each column below, or build a wheel for each column and spin all three.

CharacterSettingTwist
A knightin a librarywho is afraid of the dark
A foxon the moonmade entirely of glass
A robot chefin a flooded cityduring a thunderstorm
A grandmotherat a night marketwith one thing far too big
A lighthouse keeperinside a giant treeseen from directly above

Five options in each column already gives 125 different prompts, and the odd combinations are usually the best ones.

Prompts by skill level

  • Beginner: single objects from real life, such as a mug, a shoe, a houseplant, a set of keys or your own hand.
  • Improving: simple scenes, such as a corner of your room, a street from a photo, an animal in motion or a plate of food.
  • Confident: full ideas, such as a character sheet, a creature design, a building that could not exist or a book cover.
  • Technique practice: draw the result using only straight lines, only dots, your other hand or a single continuous line.

A 15-minute daily sketch routine

  1. Two minutes: loosen up with circles, lines and scribbles.
  2. Spin the wheel once and accept the result. No re-spins.
  3. Three minutes: three tiny thumbnail sketches of different ways to draw it.
  4. Eight minutes: draw the best thumbnail properly.
  5. Two minutes: write the date and one thing you would change next time.

In Elimination mode a list of thirty prompts lasts exactly a month, which makes it a simple way to run your own daily drawing challenge.

Frequently asked questions

Does the wheel work for digital art and painting too?

Yes. The prompts are ideas, not instructions, so they suit pencil, ink, paint, digital art, collage or clay equally well.

How many drawing prompts can I add?

Hundreds. Paste any list with one prompt per line. Long prompts are shortened on the slices, and the full text appears in the result popup.

How can I get new drawing ideas each day?

Paste a long list of prompts and use Elimination mode. Spin once a day and each prompt is removed after you draw it.

Can I use this for Pictionary?

Yes. Fill the wheel with words or phrases, and each player spins and draws what it lands on.
